Y2 a

Year Two have had a busy term learning about Heroes and Villains, with work including comic making, story writing and starting to learn their two, five and ten times tables! The children were also entrepreneurs during our Enabling Enterprise Café Challenge. In groups, the children created their own themes including the Minecraft Café, The Pokemon Café, The Superhero Café and many that were Christmas themed.

They used three main skills; teamwork, staying positive and problem solving. The children produced menus, tablecloths, signs and decorations which really enhanced the café vibe. The food that they made looked delicious… a choice of sandwiches, iced biscuits and popcorn. Each class took £60 and made £45 profit each. The children will be able to choose how this is spent in their classrooms.

Here is some of our work from this term.

Maths workshop

Year 2 parents came in for a maths workshop to find out how to help their children learn.

World’s largest Lesson

Year 2 have been learning about climate change and renewable energy. Wilf and Cecilia said that the world is getting hotter  and the energy is being wasted and ruining the atmosphere. They said that they had learnt that in some parts of the world that poo can be used to make compost and that this is a renewable energy. They learnt a song to go with it.

ARCHIVE – here is what we got up to in Year 2 in 2015-16:

Each week our Y5 Digital Leaders will report on what the children in have been doing. Here is their latest report:

This week in maths year 2 have been doing adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying. They’ve been growing cress and they’ve been taking care of them. They’ve done an experiment when they’ve been growing plants. They put one plant in a bank so it had no air. They’ve been looking at which countries have rainforest for the topic on the rainforest. On Monday they had sports day. One person said “It was fun and exciting but it was also tiring.”

Last week in Y2 were  building a massive tower out of blocks. They’ve been writing stories. They had to bring in a box so they could make their own rainforest display. They’ve been drawing pine cones and planting seeds. They did a science experiment where they had to move water from one bucket to another using different materials.

Y2 Maths workshop

The third maths workshop of the year was very well attended by Y2 parents. The children and parents engaged in various number puzzles and problem solving activities. They looked at number patterns and odd and even number challenges.

Science Week

In Y2 during science week, we tried to think about how we could move water from one bucket to another using a selection of equipment. It was trickier than we thought but we came up with some great ideas.

Here are some of our Spring wall displays.

Spring term Parent Workshop

Over 50% of parents attended a very successful maths workshop to show parents about how the children in Y2 are tackling problem solving and reasoning questions. The teachers showed them how using practical apparatus was helpful and also how drawing visual aids and making representations on paper was also extremely useful to help children with their working out and thinking skills. Parents and children worked together very well and had lots of fun.

Here is the presentation  in case you missed it.

Here are some displays and artwork from the Autumn term.

Year 2 had a great trip to the Natural History Museum to look at dinosaurs and earthquakes.

Holly Park children have been thinking about a class charter. You can find out more about Holly Park as a Rights Respecting School here.
